The Ozark Trail was a private association that promoted better highways. Route 66 would be aligned along a secondary highway through Avilla, Phelps, and Halltown. Trail #2 from Carthage to Joplin was the "Jefferson Highway". The numbers on the map indicate the highway name: #50 was the Ozark Trail and it went through Mt. These trails were mostly unpaved dirt-surfaced roads that were in poor conditions. Springfield is on the right side, and Joplin on the left side of the map.
